A core belief at Garage Project is that beer should be fun and inclusive. We love collaboration, and when we work with other breweries we look for those who share a similar ethos and values.

We are extremely disappointed that two of our recent collaborating partners have fallen well short of this mark. Upon learning of concerning accounts of toxic and unsafe work environments, we immediately pulled all stock of our Tired Hands collaboration from our venues and events in Australia.

To gain from this beer doesn’t sit right with us, so we will be donating 100% of profits from the sale of “Shook” to RespectED Aotearoa, and the Pink Boots Society in both New Zealand and Australia. These funds will assist these organisations in training, education, and developing harm reduction tools for the brewing industry.

The wider reports coming out of the US, UK, and European brewing and hospitality industries are deeply upsetting. They are a wake up call, and a moment to take stock in our own backyard. We stand for a diverse, inclusive, and safe industry.

At Garage Project we have a range of support mechanisms in place to help protect our team and build a culture that we can be proud of. These include:

• Safe Spaces Kaupapa in all our venues

• Bullying and harassment policies

• Mental Health wellbeing training and support programmes

• Sexual harm prevention training through RespectED Aotearoa

These policies and tools have been developed in response to some of the challenges we’ve faced over the years running a brewery and multiple Garage Project hospitality venues. We see them as a work in progress and there is always room for improvement . We have opened up the conversation with our own team this week to continue making these improvements within our own established systems and culture.

Going forward, we will also be implementing new steps to require that festivals and events that Garage Project attends have systems in place to create safe and inclusive environments for all attendees and staff.

We stand in solidarity with any victim of abuse and mistreatment in the Craft Beer and Hospitality industry, and we pledge to support change and improvement.
