Hāpi 2020 Update – Garage Project
Mar 16 2020

Hi all,

It's with a heavy heart that we message you today to let you know that Hāpi Festival & Symposium 2020 has been cancelled. Despite our best laid plans, and in the interest of public safety, it's the only real course of action for us this year.

The concept of Hāpi Festival is to be a global celebration of hops and beers brewed across the world, with like-minded people coming together to share and connect with the local craft beer community in NZ. Without people being able to travel safely at the moment, and in the interests of public health here in New Zealand in accordance with quarantine measures, it has developed into a festival experience well outside of what we want to present, and for you to experience.

We will be issuing 100% refunds to all tickets purchased to the Festival and Symposium. We are working through that at the moment with Eventbrite and will be in touch through their platform with confirmation of the refund to ticket holders directly. (Fun fact, you have to individually refund every ticket bought through their platform. So please bear with us, as it will take us a little while to click that many times!)

We're truly gutted by all of this. We feel upset for the ticket holders overseas and locally with travel plans made that will be difficult to alter. We're upset that you won't get to try incredible beers from some of the best breweries in the world, and we're sad that we won't be seeing those breweries here for hop harvest and the Symposium. Over the last six months, our team has also worked incredibly hard to stage the events, and in the last few weeks it's been increasingly stressful and difficult for them as you can imagine. At the end of the day the wellbeing of our staff and fan community are of the utmost importance to us, and this course of action is the only way to guarantee that.

But a little positive news. Our commitment to Hāpi Research, and our work around developing new hops and promoting hop forward beers is a long term commitment for Garage Project. We're in this for the long term, and we will be back next year. Better than ever and with a phenomenal line up of breweries and beers for you to try. In the meantime, please keep yourselves and loved ones safe. If there is an opportunity to safely support independent craft breweries, bars, retailers and taprooms near you, please consider it over the coming difficult weeks ahead.

Finally, we are working to adapt to the new world we all find ourselves in. There are plans to take the Symposium online and make it open and accessible to everyone interested in the more technical aspects of hoppy beer. We also find ourselves with a non insignificant number of beautiful Hāpi Festival Rastal glasses that we'll be looking to find homes for. We'll be in touch about both of those in the coming weeks as plans firm up.

Why was Hāpi 2020 Beer Festival and Symposium Cancelled?

Given the developments over the past 48 hours, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Hāpi 2020 Beer Festival and Symposium. We have been closely monitoring updates from the WHO and the NZ Government, and given the recent travel ban restrictions and likely bans on large gatherings we are unable to proceed with Hāpi 2020. The wellbeing of our staff and fan community are of the utmost importance to us, and this course of action is the only way to guarantee that.

Is Hāpi 2020 postponed to a later date or rescheduled for another date in 2020?

Hāpi 2020 Beer Festival and Symposium is cancelled, not rescheduled to a later date.

When/where is Hāpi 2021?

Hāpi 2021 date and location are still TBA, but it will most definitely be going ahead, coinciding with the 2021 NZ Hop Harvest.

What is the attendee refund policy?

Garage Project will provide a full refund of Hāpi 2020 Festival & Symposium tickets for all attendees. Attendees will receive an email confirming your refund in the coming days. You do not need to request a refund. They will be issued automatically.

When will refunds be issued?

The refund will be credited to the attendees bank account or card used for purchase within 14 business days, depending on the bank. Please contact us if you have any questions at info@garageproject.co.nz

Will attendees be refunded for hotel/airline tickets?N

No, attendees must contact their hotel/lodging/airlines directly to cancel reservations.

Will any Hāpi Symposium talks be made available virtually?

The Hāpi 2020 Symposium is cancelled in its current form. We are currently looking into the option to create a virtual host for Hāpi 2020 Symposium talks and/or presentations. Watch this space, more info in the coming weeks.
