We’re always keen to try something new in our monthly FRESH brews and this July we’ve got something pretty special. In the past hops have been grown all around New Zealand, but in more recent times commercial hop growing in NZ has taken place exclusively in the Motueka region.

A couple of years ago we partnered with a brand new hop farm that’s also trying something new. They’ve set up in a remote valley outside of Murchison, surrounded by National Parks, to grow hops where they’ve never been grown before.

There have been plenty of people telling them that it wouldn’t work, but the results from this year's trial fields shows that not only does it work, but the results are pretty exciting.

We know hops have a terroir and the really exciting thing for a brewer is how different the micro climate will affect the flavour of the hops. With extra cold winters and hotter summers these new hops have been subjected to extremes and these early results suggest the hops love it.

These trial hops are just a taste of what is to come, but it’s a taste that you can enjoy now in FRESH July. Light lager and oats create a lush hazy base for this beer on top of which we’ve layered a heavy dry hop of our new Nelson Lakes grown Motueka hops along with top notes of Ekuanot and Mosaic.

The result is big chewy malt sweetness topped with a bubblegum, lychee aroma and a palate loaded with juicy, succulent sun-ripened peach and nectarine, finished with a touch of lime zest. It all goes to show that trying something new can really pay off.

Fresh IPA, a rolling, ever-changing, monthly series of one-offs, brewed in small batches and available only from our brewery outlets and only while stocks last.

Each batch is an opportunity to try a new brewery fresh IPA, unfiltered and unfined, showcasing a unique combination of yeast, malt and hops. Just fun, fresh hoppy beer at its best.
