Treehugger Can

We're on a sustainability journey at Garage Project. We are not perfect, but everyday we're looking for ways to reduce waste, lessen our carbon footprint and minimise our overall impact on the earth.

What is Treehugger?

Treehugger is a beautifully balanced NZ pilsner and a beery best friend to the forests: $1 from every six pack of Treehugger sold goes towards funding grassroots tree planting projects in New Zealand. Starting with our pals at Trees for Canterbury, Treehugger is supporting the regeneration of native flora across Aotearoa.

Why Did We Make Treehugger?

We know sustainability doesn't just begin when the trees go into the ground - with Treehugger, we've thrown everything at the wall to try out a range of sustainable production processes all at once, ensuring that the can in your hand is our most sustainable beer yet.

Treehugger is made with 100% local (NZ) ingredients from suppliers using regenerative practices, 100% low footprint NZ hops, lower emission freight and minimal ink. We're also investing in other ways to be more sustainable; by using plant and water based inks on cardboard, an outer box made with more recycled content and redesigned to avoid the need for extra stickers, and a six pack wrap versus a box, which uses less material.

At the brewery, we brewed at a higher ABV to reduce energy, and changed processes to reduce Co2 use, such as locking in natural Co2 for carbonation, and purging cans with nitrogen rather than Co2.

Why Canterbury? How are the Trees getting in the Ground?

We are working really closely with our pals at Trees for Canterbury. We donate the money, they grow the trees, and then they deliver the trees to the Styx Living Laboratory Trust.

The crew at the Styx Living Laboratory Trust are then going to plant the trees as part of their river catchment project. We chose Canterbury to focus on first as that's where Pete, Jos and Ian are from, so it's an area close to their hearts. And at the moment, there just aren't that many native trees; there is less than 1% of indigenous vegetation on the Canterbury Plains.
